ONE LIFE's Use of pathos on Facebook
ONE LIFE’s chapter is still fairly new, seeing as it was brought to MSU in 2012. This organization uses Facebook as a way to market their cause, inform people about upcoming events, and inspire them to go out an make a difference.
ONE LIFE utilizes its Facebook page to reach out to the local community, especially to students, and encourage them to get involved in the ONE LIFE movement. The Facebook page contains many pictures of group members performing various acts of community service and outreach, which inspires both a feeling of community and confidence that students are making a difference.
MSU ONE LIFE presents itself very professionally on the group’s Facebook page. The page is public, and so anyone who visits and feels so inclined can ‘like’ the page and receive updates about the organization in their newsfeed.

Most recently, the MSU chapter organized and hosted a 5K run/walk to raise money and awareness for “Keep a Child Alive,” an organization that donates funds to pay for children’s medical costs in Africa. In order to inspire runners and non-runners alike to sign up for this event, ONE LIFE posted pictures of children in Africa who, although they are smiling, are obviously living in poverty and suffering the consequences of such living conditions. Images like these invoke a feeling of pity and helplessness among viewers, but ONE LIFE uses this strategy as a way to move people to action. And what better way to get involved than donate and run a 5K to support efforts to help such children worldwide?
Overall, the ONE LIFE page is formal, informative, and professional. It provides simple updates and photos of activities within the club with a few links to other sites and information about other organizations outside of those that ONE LIFE works with. The message of the organization is clear on the page, and the group appeals to the philanthropic nature of people to achieve their goals of a wider audience base and more supporters of ONE LIFE’s causes. This use of pathos is effective in its simplicity.
